Other Ungulates

Grouped together in this category, are some of the larger even-toed ungulates we have come across and photographed over the years. These include Zebra, Wildebeest, Buffalo, Giraffe and Hippos. Rhinos are also ungulates but have an odd number of toes. Zebra and wildebeest, in particular, play a major role in the animal ecosystems of southern and eastern Africa since they make up a large part of the big cats’ diets. Their remains also sustain populations of many scavengers including hyenas and jackals.

Zebra and wildebeest, accompanied by several gazelle species, make up the largest overland migration in the world. Every year, around 1.5 million wildebeest, 400,000 zebras and 200,000 gazelles trek a circular route meandering up to 2000km through Tanzania and Kenya in search of fresh grazing and water – all the while relentlessly pursued by big cats and other predators.

On the way, they give birth on the move to thousands of new offspring over a period of several months.
