Male Eland – heaviest of all antelopes
The term Antelope is a catch-all term to describe a very wide collection of different browsing ruminants with even-toed hooves belonging to the Bovidae family. This group excludes cattle, sheep and goats, but does include buffaloes and giraffes. The African antelope family includes some 78 species. All males and females in some species have permanent hollow horns. This feature differentiates them from deer which shed their horns annually.
Sizes vary greatly from the Royal Antelope weighing in at just 4 kilos to the giant Eland weighing over 800 Kg. In this collection of photos we have included gazelles and deer – putting Buffaloes and Giraffes into the “Other Ungulates” group, thus keeping them separate from their smaller antelope cousins.
